I've talked about Temptalia before, it's a makeup blog with a smaller but active and friendly forum community. Currently MissVee, one of the moderators, is holding one of her own contests: Inspire Me. I think it's a nice twist to the usual themed look, because you have to find your own theme and make it work. Not only does it need to work on you, but maintain and highlight the connection to the inspiration.
Your assignment: To create a look inspired by a photo. You MUST post the inspiration photo. Your look CANNOT be "inspired" but another makeup look! No duplicating other FOTDs.
One of my other interests is photography. I used to be pretty avid about it, though I haven't been out shooting much lately. There is something about this time of year, I want to be out capturing the autumn glory, but I never do. Not sure why exactly, but I digress. Due to that particular hobby, I have a heap of photos, one of which I knew would work for this contest. I did find one, eventually.. it took forever! You would think it would be easy enough, but it proved to be more difficult than I first thought. It was just the other day that I had settled on a photo, and had the time to put the look together.

It shouldn't be difficult to figure out where some of my inspiration came from. It was a fun look to do, and while I've used all the colours before - it's the first time I've put them together like this. I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out.

Using a thin layer of UDPP, I covered the skin from lash line to the brow. On the lid, slightly up into the crease and along the upper and lower inner corner, I used smoothblue liner to add depth to the look. The lighter side of bustling (l’oreal hip bright shadow duo) was lightly placed from the crease to the brow bone. Using gulf stream e/s on the inner third of the lid, I also pulled it down across the tear duct and onto the lower lash line. On the middle third of the lid, the lighter side of showy (l’oreal hip bright shadow duo) was applied and lightly blended with gulf stream. Copper (nyx eyeshadow) went onto the outer third of the lid and up into the crease, blending along the top line of teal colours and the lower line of gold. Rust pearl (nyx loose pearl eyeshadow) was blended with the copper for intensity. To add further definition to the crease, I applied the brown half of forgiving (l’oreal hip bright shadow duo), being sure to blend away any harsh lines. As subtle highlight, woodwinked was put under the highest point of the brow.
The outer 4/5 of the lower lash line was lined with rich ground fluidline, and then overlaid with copper. The copper was very gently pulled into the gulf stream on the inner corner. Glam black (Maybelline the colossal volum’ express) was used on the top lashes, while black (cover girl volume exact) was used on the lower.
I've definitely been slacking with keeping up with things here. Really, it's nothing more than feeling unmotivated. I am hoping for that to change though, starting right now. I do have some looks that I want to share, and maybe a few product rambles.
For now though, I'll leave you with a look I came up with last night. I was very much inspired by two make-up mavens (Christine & Jude) to create an intense smoky eye. Even though I love seeing these looks, I'm admittedly uncomfortable wearing them because I have a significant fear of the dreaded raccoon eyes. Nevertheless, in the solitude of my bedroom during the wee hours of the morning I made an attempt.
Unless noted otherwise, all product used is by MAC Cosmetics.
As I frequently do, I used UDPP from lash line to brow as a base. Then I used cottage cheese (nyx jumbo pencil) as an additional base from the crease up to the brow, and then covered with the marbled side of hot contrast. Sharkskin was the base for the lid and I extended it out into a cat eye shape, which was then covered with the solid side of hot contrast. I deepened the outer part of the crease with carbon, topped it with some blackground, and finally added some cherry (nyx eyeshadow) onto that. Since I was going for intense contrast, I chose gesso as a highlight colour. I applied it under the highest point of my brows, and also used it to soften the inner and outer vertical borders of the shadows. I used carbon again under the lower lashes, and then used black (annabelle kohl liner) to line both the lower lashline and the lower waterline. Below the carbon, I added some more gesso as further contrast. I applied one coat of mascara (cover girl volume exact) to the top and bottom lashes to finish.
I posted this at one of the makeup communities I frequent, and was extremely pleased at all the positive feedback. There are obviously some improvements I can make, but it's definitely nice when people jive with your creations.
I decided that I was going to rework my day look, and make it a bit more intense for night. I wanted to deepen the crease, so I added more handwritten and humid e/s. Mimicing the colours from the lid, I reflected them onto the lower lash line. Using metallic kohl eyeliner in mojito (annabelle), I defined the upper lash line and finished off with a few more coats of mascara.
I love these colours.
After playing with the FGM last night, and seeing some inspiring green looks – I decided that I’d go green today.
I started off with UDPP from lash line to brow, and then used lucky jade shadestick on the lid. Then I applied fresh green mix (solid) all over the lid, and then the marbled side in the crease with a slight overlap onto the edge of the lid. Shore leave went above the crease, and then I used gorgeous gold as a highlight right at the arch of the brow. Going back to the lid I used juxt on the inner third, more fresh green mix on the middle lid, a small amount of handwritten was used to deepen the crease and then some humid on the outer lid, which was then slightly pulled into the crease. Also used some more gorgeous gold in the tear duct, and then finished with volume exact mascara in black.
I left the heavy lashes and liner for this look because I was going to work, but looking at the photos now I think that some subtle green liner on the upper lid and maybe even the lower would have made a more polished look..
..what do you think?
